News Groups Seek to Raise Black Lung Awareness
The Center for Public Integrity (CPI) has teamed with National Public Radio (NPR) and the Charleston Gazette on a series of articles to raise awareness of black lung disease in the Central Appalachian coalfields.
With strict limits placed on exposure to respirable coal dust in the Coal Act of 1969, many believed the legislation marked a turning point. In fact, the law and the regulations supporting it initially did have a beneficial effect.
