Coal Official Pleads Guilty in Kentucky

A mine foreman has pleaded guilty to failing to identify or correct hazardous conditions at a Kentucky coal mine where a miner died last year.

Bryant Massingale, 52, entered his plea Thursday in federal court. He will be sentenced in January.

Massingale was a second-shift foreman at Manalapan Mining Co.’s P-1 Mine in Harlan County in June 2011 when miners allegedly were directed to work under sections of the mine roof that were not properly supported. Weeks later, on June 29, David A. Partin, 49, died when a large section of the mine wall fell on him.
